People shake their heads trying to figure it out. What the heck? Is time really accelerating? Why does every day seem to pass by faster and faster? After pondering this for several years, I finally developed a theory to explain this strange phenomenon which I later dubbed simply the “Time Acceleration Theory.”

Ok, here is what I think is happening. It’s not super scientific or even all that boggling. I think it is just a simple question of mathmatics and our memory capacity. Below are my example scenarios:

Scenario One: A baby is only 10 days old. On that 10th day, the length of that day in proportion to the entire lifetime experience is 1/10th of a lifetime. In other words, the total sum of that days experiences represent 10% of the baby’s lifetime.

Scenario Two: The same baby is now celebrating its 10th birthday. It has now lived 3650 days. The length of the day represents 1/3650 of a day in the life of the child or 0.0002739726 of a lifetime.

Note something interesting here. Each day is smaller, or shorter, in proportion to the entire lifetime. When you factor in memories, the amount of information we perceive in a single day, each day is a smaller portion of the whole. This is why, in my opinion, that each day seems longer. It seems longer because it is a smaller slice of our overall memories. It’s a pretty simple concept and just my own theory, but it makes sense to me and those with whom I’ve shared it with.

Random chance

God created it

Anthropic principle

Biocentric

Random Chance Theory

Some believe life and came to exist on our planet through sheer random chance, that is was a simple numbers game. Carl Segan popularized the Drake Equation which predicts the probability of life existing on a planet somewhere else in the universe and is integral to the SETI project (search for extra-terrestrial intelligence).

God Creation Theory

Theists, those who believe in the existence of a superior being or power, commonly called ‘God’, believe God created everything around us, including life and humans. Some theists combine scientific theories with the God creation theorizing that God followed classical rules of physics in the creation, but was ultimately the divine hand behind each step in the creation.

Anthropic Principle/Theory

First articulated by Cambridge astrophysicist Brandon Carter in 1973, the principle purports that human-like being could only exist in conditions very similar to our own. So, in order to find human like beings, the would only exist in similar habitats like earth with physical conditions very similar to those found here on earth. Recently, those followers of newer quantum string theories expand upon this line of thinking with the existence of unlimited multiverses, each having its own set of laws of physics. If the number of multiverses is infinite with unlimited combinations of the laws of physics and variations in the numbers of elements, then the certainty of conditions similar to our own is certain in other universes.

Biocentric Theory

One of the more recent theories is known as the biocentric theory of creation. This theory puts forth that life created the universe instead of the other way around. Much of the recent developments in this theory are the results of experiments in field of quantum mechanics. What we perceive as reality is a process that involves our consciousness. An “external” reality, if it existed, would by definition have to exist in space. But this is meaningless, because space and time are not absolute realities but rather tools of the human and animal mind.

I believe that almost everyone experiences pivotal events in their lives which act as a ‘reset button.’ These events cause us to question the reality which we believed to be true–and more often than not, this questioned reality is an adopted reality. The outcome after passing through a ‘reset button’ experience is we reject an adopted reality and replace it with a new belief based up personal experience resulting in a significant change in how we view our individual reality.

Reset Button Events

Life altering events like a near-death experience, loss of a job, a divorce or even a dramatic change of residence can be reset button events. Some would consider a mid-life crisis one such event. In each case, the event itself causes us to think about what we value in life and what is ultimately important to us. For example, in the movie American Beauty, the character Lester Burnham is fired from his job and discovers his wife is having an affair. These experiences cause him to ‘wake up’ and question values in his life. As a result, he takes a low stress job, starts exercising, smoking pot, and buys his dream muscle car. Lester rejects major patterns and habits in his life and changes his ‘world view.’
